Ask Dr. Z

"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease."

Dear friend,

I hope this newsletter finds you well.

As Thomas Edison implied, illness is NOT due to a deficiency in medication. You might find that idea food for thought. Please share it with your friends and family.

I enjoy hearing from you. Write to me with your comments and questions. I make every attempt to answer your e-mails as soon as my busy schedule allows. At times this may take a few days. Please understand and be patient.

I get letters (Bolds and Links added by Dr. Z)

Last Saturday I received the following e-mail:

Dear Dr. Z

My son is autistic and has severe OCD he is 21...OCD just got severe since treating for lyme...He is using celexa at 10mg day and not doing much...I purchased your PleoSan Strep and Pleo Quent Drops at the advise of another parent... Question is can I use these with his celexa and also the risperdal that he is on?  Thanks so much for your help...Eileen B

Here is my response:

Dear Dr. Z...My son is autistic and has severe OCD he is 21

How terrible - I feel for you and him.

...OCD just got severe since treating for lyme

how did you treat it - antibiotics?  For how long??

...He is using celexa at 10mg day and not doing much...I purchased your PleoSan Strep and Pleo Quent Drops at the advise of another parent...

Question is can I use these with his celexa and also the risperdal that he is on?

Absolutely yes - both are homeopathic/isopathic remedies

Both celexa and risperdal have devastating potential side effects

The mother's response:

Yes my son is under treatment with abx's for lyme...It is chronic and will have to be treated for awhile..  He has been on abx's with breaks for 7 months.   Eileen B

My next question to Eileen:

What is the specific trade or generic name of the antibiotic your son is on?

The reason I am asking - you stated in your previous e-mail that his OCD is worse since initiating the lyme therapy.
" OCD just got severe since treating for lyme"

Eileen responds today:

H Dr. Z...

Well he started on Doxy with severe herx reaction and developed photosensitivity...being it was last summer we were switched to sumycin which was much better for him with sun....

Then he was on amox/zithromax for several weeks with no real gains on the lyme....

Then a 3 month break to do a trial of IVIG as he is HLA DR4 and this was suppose to help him tremendously...He was on that for 6 months and was a non-responder.

At the 3 month start we added in Mepron/Zith and this caused a severe herx at the three week mark and he was just about pychotic.....His aggression was at it's worse on this....It was stopped after 5 weeks.

We then started Minocycline and no gains either....

We are now doing Nystatin for yeast and will restart Doxy this weekend for two weeks and see his LLMD.  He wants to see him at that time to see if he is having herx reaction.....You see LLMD is stumped in a way....he herxes on the schedule that lyme  partients usually herx on but does not appear to be getting better..His autism is most definetly exasberated.....He has had some OCD issues in the past but not to this extent.....He did develop a terrible facial tic prior to lyme treatment but that has gotten better.....comes and goes now but was pretty bad before....His OCD and vocal tics are really at their worst..even on abx breaks....

Just started Natural Cellular Defense and that seems to be helping him with aggressive outbursts and seems to be much happier and a bit more compliant....only doing 2drops 3xday...I want to add in the homeopathic drops for the OCD this weekend and see if that may help....

But I should say that the lyme treatment has helped his fatigue and also his light sensitivity....He is still has severe hyperacusis and has had this since about age 3.....Well I could go on and on about him, but I think you wanted to know about the abx's.....Another Mom just starting lyme treatment with her young son is experiencing the same reactions as my son has...OCD, vocal tics, aggression, etc...

Well I thank you so much for your interest in my son's case..Eileen B

Dr. Z's comments:

What a sad and terrible story.

"OCD just got severe since treating for lyme."

Eileen's statement caught my eyes immediately. How is Lymes treated in conventional medicine? Massive amounts of antibiotics for prolonged periods of time.

  • Here is a quote from the 2005 PDR about Zithromax

Post-Marketing Experience: Adverse events reported with azithromycin during the post-marketing period in adult and/or pediatric patients for which a causal relationship may not be established include:

Allergic: Arthralgia, edema, urticaria, angioedema.

Cardiovascular: Arrhythmias including ventricular tachycardia, hypotension. There have been rare reports of QT prolongation and torsades de pointes .

Gastrointestinal: Anorexia, constipation, dyspepsia, flatulence, vomiting/diarrhea rarely resulting in dehydration, pseudomembranous colitis, pancreatitis, oral candidiasis and rare reports of tongue discoloration.

General: Asthenia, paresthesia, fatigue, malaise and anaphylaxis (rarely fatal).

Genitourinary: Interstitial nephritis and acute renal failure, vaginitis.

Hematopoietic: Thrombocytopenia.

Liver/Biliary: Abnormal liver function including hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice, as well as rare cases of hepatic necrosis and hepatic failure, some of which have resulted in death.

Nervous System: Convulsions, dizziness/vertigo, headache, somnolence, hyperactivity, nervousness, agitation and syncope.

Psychiatric: Aggressive reaction and anxiety.

Skin/Appendages: Pruritus, rarely serious skin reactions including erythema multiforme, Stevens Johnson Syndrome, and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Special Senses: Hearing disturbances including hearing loss, deafness, and/or tinnitus, rare reports of taste perversion.

  • Let me ask YOU: What is wrong with this picture?
  • What would YOU say to Eileen?
  • What would YOU have me say to Eileen?
  • What would YOU do, if this were YOUR child?

Here is what Eileen wrote:

"At the 3 month start we added in Mepron/Zith and this caused a severe herx at the three week mark and he was just about pychotic.....His aggression was at it's worse on this....It was stopped after 5 weeks..."

You can probably see why this is so.

Death by Medicine?

Here are excerpts of my article on the Death by Medicine, which I first published July 2004.

At that time, I called Gary Null's office in Manhattan. A staff person contacted him by phone. Through her, he gave me permission to quote form this research project.

I want to explicitly thank Gary Null for allowing me to share this with you.

Please read the full version of this terrifying article.

ABSTRACT
A definitive review and close reading of medical peer-review journals, and government health statistics shows that American medicine frequently causes more harm than good.

The number of people having in-hospital, adverse drug reactions (ADR) to prescribed medicine is 2.2 million. 1

Dr. Richard Besser, of the CDC, in 1995, said the number of unnecessary antibiotics prescribed annually for viral infections was 20 million. Dr. Besser, in 2003, now refers to

  1. tens of millions of unnecessary antibiotics.
  2. The number of unnecessary medical and surgical procedures performed annually is 7.5 million.
  3. The number of people exposed to unnecessary hospitalization annually is 8.9 million.
  4. The total number of iatrogenic deaths shown in the following table is 783,936.

It is evident that the American medical system is the leading cause of death and injury in the United States. The 2001 heart disease annual death rate is 699,697; the annual cancer death rate, 553,251. 5

We could have an even higher death rate by using Dr. Lucien Leape's 1997 medical and drug error rate of 3 million. 14 Multiplied by the fatality rate of 14% (that Leape used in 1994 )16 we arrive at an annual death rate of 420,000 for drug errors and medical errors combined. If we put this number in place of Lazorou's 106,000 drug errors and the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) 98,000 medical errors (which may have a drug error overlap with Lazorou¹s study), we could add another 216,000 deaths making a total of 999,936 deaths annually.
