Ask Dr. Z

"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease."
Thomas A. Edison

Quotes for Your Life

These are quotes from the DAN! (Defeat Autism Now!) physician training I attended in Seattle.

"If you are sitting on a tack it takes a lot of Risperdal to make it feel better. The appropriate treatment for tack-sitting is tack removal."
Sidney Baker MD

"If you are sitting on two tacks, removing one does not produce a fifty-percent improvement. Chronic illness is, or becomes, multifactorial."
Sidney Baker MD

"Easy question: What is the next best option available for my child?

Hard question: Have we done every thing we can for this child?"
Sidney Baker MD

I get letters

My son, 11 years old, was diagnosed with high functioning autism/Asperger's. He would make no eye contact and had a very tough time in school interacting with other children. He was angry a lot of the time, and overall unhappy. He's stood out in school with socially inappropriate behavior.

After the first 10 days of Dr. Z's neurological work with my son, a strict low carb diet and supportive supplements, he starts making eye contact, not all the time. I catch him looking straight into my eyes to tell me something. This is amazing! I drop what ever I'm doing in order to keep it going.

Now, nine months later, he is a different kid. He is interested in things. He asks questions. He is able to make and maintain friendships…a much happier kid. He has improved in school by two math levels. His teachers see overall improvement: he appears more empathetic towards other children and is willing to participate."

What is "Reduced Glutathione"?

Glutathione is a small protein molecule produced naturally in every cell of our body. It is made up of three amino acids - glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. The amino acid cysteine contains a sulfur group responsible for the chemical properties of the glutathione protein molecule.

You may or may not have heard of glutathione. However, there are well over 40,000 published scientific research papers on the roles of glutathione in cells of the human body. Research indicates that glutathione in its reduced form (GSH) is one of the most important molecules required in the body:

1. It is the principal antioxidant deactivating unstable molecules called free radicals

2. It assists other antioxidants - vitamins A, C and E

2. It is one of the most important molecules in the detoxification system

3. It acts as an immuno-enhancer for optimal function of the immune system.

"Reduced Glutathione" deficiency and chronic illness

Reduced Glutathione is the principal antioxidant protecting the human cell against free radical damage. Free radical damage interferes with normal cell function and can lead to cell death.

Much recent research points to the fact that low low levels of reduced glutathione are found in many chronic illnesses such as:

  • Alcoholism
  • Alzheimer's
  • asthma
  • Autism
  • cancer
  • cardiovascular disease
  • chronic fatigue
  • degenerative diseases of aging
  • diabetes
  • macular degeneration
  • mercury toxicity
  • Parkinson's

Dr. Z recommends - Glutathione SR by Thorne

Glutathione SR - New patent pending sustained release formula of Reduced Glutathione. Its sustained release properties protect it from break down by stomach acid and digestive enzymes.

The process of aging is associated with increased oxidative activity and decreased levels of reduced glutathione. This appears to be especially prominent in individuals experiencing a decline in cognitive function.

Conversely, those living over 100 years tend to have higher glutathione reductase activity.

Glutathione, as an important intracellular antioxidant, plays a crucial role in preventing free-radical-induced lipid peroxidation. Liver tissue contains a high level of glutathione, mainly in its reduced form. May be useful for individuals sensitive to chemicals and/or heavy metals, especially mercury.

Research suggests that supplementation with reduced glutathione may be useful as supportive therapy in conditions such as:

  • Alcoholism
  • Alzheimer's
  • asthma
  • Autism
  • cancer
  • cardiovascular disease
  • chronic fatigue
  • degenerative diseases of aging
  • diabetes
  • macular degeneration
  • mercury toxicity
  • Parkinson's

Additional ways to increase "Reduced Glutathione" levels

1. Hydrolyzed Whey

Hydrolyzed Whey Protein - Complete protein is essential for the cleansing process. This whey protein contains adequate amounts of the amino acid/peptide cysteine to boost celluar levels of reduced glutathione, probably the most important protein molecule for detoxification and free radical protection of all human cells.

2. Ascorbic Acid Caps

Ascorbic Acid has been shown to increase "reduced glutathione" levels in patients with Vitamin C deficiency. This may be significant because "reduced glutathione" defiency is present in many chronic illnesses.

Ascorbic Acid may be useful as an antioxidant as supportive therapy in heavy metal toxicity (particularly mercury), as well as nutritional supportive therapy for immune function problems, and as supportive therapy to help alleviate the symptomatic effects of infectious processes (when taken to bowel tolerance).

There is evidence that it may counteract the free radical damage to the body's tissues and DNA caused by smoking cigarettes. We recommend it as an addition to our Quit Smoking protocol.
